The Minister for the Cabinet Office wishes to appoint 4-5 Board Member of the Charity Commission for England and Wales. These are public appointments and will be conducted in compliance with the Commissioner for Public Appointments’ Code of Practice for Ministerial Appointments to Public Bodies under the principles of merit, fairness and openness.

These Board Member appointments require people of high calibre with the necessary skills and experience to assist the Chair in leading the Charity Commission. They will possess strong leadership skills along with the expertise to oversee the independent, impartial and proportionate regulation of the charity sector. In line with the Charity Commission’s statutory obligations the Minister is seeking to appoint a legally qualified Board Member and a Board Member who knows about the conditions in Wales. Additionally one of the successful candidates will be required to Chair the Audit Committee and will have a relevant Accountancy qualification. One individual may cover more than one of the requirements outlined above.

The Charity Commission is a non-Ministerial Department responsible for maintaining the publicly accessible register of charities (there are 162,000 registered charities), for determining whether institutions are charities, for providing information and guidance to charities on complying with the law, and for the oversight and regulation of charities in England and Wales, including identifying misconduct or mismanagement and taking appropriate regulatory action.

The time commitment is 12-18 days per year, for which the remuneration is £350 per day. The term of appointment will be for three years.
