Full time, Fixed-Term appointment for 3 years
LSTM is an internationally recognised centre of excellence for research in tropical diseases. The creation of effective links with governments, organisations and institutions and responding to the health needs of communities allows LSTM to promote improved health, particularly for people of the less developed / resource poorest countries in the tropics and sub-tropics.
Funded by the Medical Research Council, we are seeking to appoint a Research Assistant or Postdoctoral Researcher to assist in a project developing and refining methods of analysing malaria genetic data. You will work closely with a multi-disciplinary team of scientists within LSTM and also with our collaborators (based at the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute, University of Lancaster, University of Oxford and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine) on the genetic epidemiology of malaria transmission. Part of the role will be to update existing maximum Likelihood (ML) analytic suites, update and extend existing Bayesian methods, and evaluate methodologies through their application on real field data sets.
A numerate scientist is required to undertake this role with a background in Statistics or Biology and relevant experience of working within a research environment. The ability to use ML and/or Bayesian analytical techniques to infer hidden parameter values would be highly desirable.
We are looking for an individual with excellent communication skills (both written and verbal), well developed research and analytical skills, plus the ability to work as an integral and co-operative member of a multi-disciplinary research team.
For appointment at Post doctoral Research Assistant level you will need to have a PhD in Statistics or Biology and have proven research experience in analysis of human and/or genetic datasets.
For appointment at Research Assistant level, the above criteria would be applicable but with requirement for a BSc or Masters degree rather than a doctorate.

Through the creation of effective links with governments, organisations and institutions and by responding to the health needs of communities, LSTM aims to promote improved health, particularly for people of the less developed / resource poorest countries in the tropics and sub-tropics.
We are seeking to appoint an experienced Post-Doctoral Research Assistant to provide maternity leave cover for up to a 12 month period. Funded by the Wellcome Trust, you would be contributing to research being undertaken on several aspects of the molecular interactions between African trypanosomes and tsetse flies. In this particular project, the emphasis is on understanding how trypanosomes migrate through the different compartments of the tsetse fly vector using a combination of state of the art techniques like proteomics, fluorescent microscopy, deep sequencing and RNAi gene knock down of trypanosome genes. The project involves collaborative work with other groups in the UK.
The successful candidate must hold a PhD in Molecular and Cell Biology and should also be experienced in bioinformatics and in running biochemical assays. Additionally, we would expect you to have experience in cell culture, fluorescent microscopy as well as in general biochemical techniques. Previous experience working with kinetoplastid parasites would be essential.
