Postdoctoral Research Associate: Multicore optical fibres for next-generation endoscopy

We are looking for an outward-looking and enthusiastic postdoctoral researcher to design, fabricate and test multicore optical fibres for use in novel endoscope configurations. The fibres would then be passed to our partner in this EPSRC-funded project (Imperial College London) to be implemented into systems.

This represents an outstanding opportunity for someone with a background in optics or photonics to take concrete steps towards developing a career in the burgeoning field of optical fibres for biomedicine. The fields of multicore optical fibres and endoscopy are growing rapidly at Bath, and our collaborators in this project have much to offer in seeing the results of the Bath research being taken through to applications in the real world. The work will take place in the Centre for Photonics and Photonic Materials (CPPM) at Bath.The Centre for Photonics and Photonics Materials and the Department of Physics at Bath are world-renowned for their mix of experimental and theoretical investigations into new forms of optical fibre waveguide. The group works in an inventive and
highly interactive environment. The University of Bath is in the top league of British research-led Universities whilst the Department of Physics was clearly ranked in the top 5 Physics Departments nationally in the last national Research Assessment Exercise in 2008. Bath is a pleasant and attractive city in the South-West of England, close to Bristol and just 1½ hours by train from London.

A 3 year postdoctoral position is available from 01/04/2013 within the Probability Laboratory in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Bath. The position is to work with Prof Peter Mörters on the EPSRC funded project “Emergence of condensation in stochastic systems”. In this project we investigate how condensation can build up, or emerge, in complex stochastic systems. This will mostly be done by rigorous analysis of probabilistic toy models.

The successful candidate will hold a PhD in applied probability or complexity science, and will have demonstrated potential for excellence in research and an emerging track record of publication in high quality, peer reviewed journals.

We have a distinctive research profile of cutting-edge, theoretically-informed research in applied aspects of psychology, of which health psychology forms a core component. We are looking to make two appointments (one Chair, one Lecturer/Senior Lecturer/Reader) to both strengthen our links between health, clinical, and social psychology programmes and research and to provide academic leadership to a department which will expand significantly over the coming years. We are particularly keen to develop a greater focus on health interventions, health cognitions, and behaviour change. We especially welcome applications from candidate with expertise in core health psychology areas.

Candidates should have a proven track record of high calibre research and evidence of the ability to obtain research grants is essential as well as expertise in academic leadership.

All candidates are expected to deliver high quality teaching, at both undergraduate and postgraduate level and to attract and successfully supervise PhD students. In particular, they will be expected to contribute to teaching on our successful MSc in Health Psychology. Applicants should preferably be Chartered Psychologists with the British Psychological Society (BPS) and hold full membership of the Division of Health Psychology (DHP), or be able to show evidence of eligibility for these memberships. In addition, where appropriate, applicants should also be registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
