Applications are invited for a 1 yr Research Midwife post in the School of Clinical & Experimental Medicine at the University of Birmingham and Birmingham Women’s Hospital.

The successful applicant(s) will be a registered midwife with a primary degree, who has experience in setting up research studies, clinical trials co-ordination, recruitment into research projects and show good understanding of R&D procedures. Applicants are expected to have worked previously clinically (eg: Band 6-7, F/G grade) and is computer-literate. Recent or current experience of clinical research is advantageous.

The aim of this post is to act as a co-ordinator for the Reproductive Health and Childbirth network (REACH) of the Birmingham and Black Country CLRN providing support for researchers and facilitating recruitment into portfolio studies. The successful candidate will be expected to provide this support to all the units participating in the REACH network. The post holder will have senior academic support to enable them to develop this role by exploring barriers and facilitators to patient recruitment into research studies.

The research midwife will work primarily at UoB, based in the Academic Unit of Birmingham Women’s Hospital but will also be expected to support research staff at other hospitals in the West Midlands network to recruit patients to the same studies if requested.

The Department of Philosophy is seeking to appoint a full-time Lecturer or Senior Lecturer in Global Ethics (start date September 2013 or as near as possible after). The successful candidate will be the Deputy Director of the Centre for the Study of Global Ethics and will work with Professor Heather Widdows, the Director of the Centre to develop and promote the Centre with regard to research, policy work and teaching. Accordingly the successful candidate must have a willingness and enthusiasm for multidisciplinary work – particularly with regard to research grants and teaching – and also a desire to influence policy and practice and to work with policy-makers, practitioners and activists to this end.

The successful candidate is likely to specialise in applied ethics, moral philosophy, or political philosophy. However, as long as their area of research falls within Philosophy (understood as submittable to the philosophy sub-panel in the REF) they are eligible to apply. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to teaching in the Department, and in particular we are seeking to appoint a candidate who can teach in the areas of bioethics, global justice and human rights, as well as contribute to ethics teaching in the core Philosophy undergraduate degree. The candidate will be expected to be involved in examining within the department and play their part in administration and innovation as required.

The post will be initially for up to 27 months with a possibility an extension subject to further funding becoming available. The post holder will work in the Future Engines and Fuels Lab and will be engaged in the research of combustion performance and fuel economy of automotive engines. The work aims to investigate various engine design and operating parameters and their effects on the combustion quality and emissions of direct injection spark ignition engines with boosting. He/she will be working on a dedicated single cylinder thermal engine in collaboration with a dedicated engine technician
for a project sponsored by Jaguar Land Rover and also with several PhD students devoted to the research area using an optical engine and combustion vessels. He/she will play a key role in interacting with industry partners/suppliers and will contribute to writing research proposals and generate reports and publications.

The successful candidate will have first degree in Mechanical Engineering, or Chemical Engineering, or Physics and PhD degree in the research of engine combustion. He/she should possess sufficient breadth and depth of specialist knowledge in the discipline and research methods and techniques. Significant research experience in the area of gasoline or diesel engine combustion is essential. Essential skills/ability required are: (1) LabView or MATLAB or visual C/BASIC; (2) Good presentation skills (in both oral and writing).

The School of Physics and Astronomy has a vacancy for a post-doctoral research fellow in gravitational-wave astrophysics. Applicants are sought to further strengthen the existing active research programme in the area of gravitational-wave astrophysics, observations and data analysis.

The candidate is expected to have a strong background in gravitational-wave physics and/or compact object astrophysics and/or data analysis, and a Ph.D. in physics, astronomy or mathematics. Experience with high-performance computing is a plus.

The Birmingham Gravitational-wave Group consists of faculty members Will Farr (from 1st October 2013), Andreas Freise, Ilya Mandel and Alberto Vecchio, four postdoctoral research associates and nine post-graduate students. The group has a broad range of research interests including compact object astrophysics, gravitational-wave observations and data analysis, instrumentation and advanced interferometry. The group is member of the GEO Collaboration, the LIGO Scientific Collaboration, and the European Pulsar Timing Array Collaboration. The group has excellent laboratory and computer facilities.

The School of Physics and Astronomy is one of the largest in the UK and was awarded Grade 5 for the excellence of its research in the last HEFCE Research Assessment Exercise. It takes in around 200 undergraduates a year and has over 100 academic and research staff, 120 graduate students and 35 technical support staff.

This is a fully AHRC-funded PhD, which will pay UK/EU fees as well as a stipend of approximately £13,590 a year for three years (subject to satisfactory progress). The PhD project is part of a large research project on Cultural Intermediation and the Creative Economy, led by the Department of Geography at the University of Birmingham. The successful candidate will write a thesis that builds upon the research themes of the wider project, focusing on how law and legal practices affect museums, radio stations or arts projects in Birmingham and Manchester. As well as being an exciting ‘real world’ project, this PhD project will draw on an understanding of contract law, licensing, property and planning as well as intellectual property law, working within both UK and the EU legal frameworks. Within this broad outline there is scope for the successful candidate to shape the project to reflect their own skills, interests and questions. Appropriate research training will be provided to the student to complement their existing skills and expertise.

The successful applicant will have the advantage of being part of a large multi-disciplinary team, which will provide a range of opportunities for supervision and learning (under the supervision of Prof Layard). The student will be working within a large, interdisciplinary team and with arts communities in Birmingham and Manchester. This will put the PhD student in an excellent position in terms of writing publications from their PhD, networking and gaining a job on completion in a related field. In addition to being part of the Cultural Intermediation research team, the successful candidate will join a thriving community of doctoral students in Birmingham Law School.

The position of GSDRC researcher is exciting and unusual, providing a bridge between academic experts and people working in donor agencies and government policy departments. It offers experience in and exposure to development policy and research at the highest level. The researchers are based in three partner organisations (University of Birmingham, IDS, and University of Manchester) but collaborate closely as a team with each other, with other GSDRC staff, and with the staff of the organisations where they are based.

One of the main services offered by the GSDRC is the “helpdesk” rapid-response research service. DFID and AusAID staff members can submit research questions on governance, social development, conflict, or humanitarian topics, and researchers are responsible for delivering high quality, policy relevant responses within very short timeframes. This involves quickly coming to grips with new subjects and issues, understanding and clarifying client needs, consulting external experts, carrying out Internet and library searches and compiling clear, comprehensive responses. Longer issues papers and literature reviews can also be commissioned by our clients on any subject within the remit of the resource centre.
