Associate Research Fellow

The College wishes to recruit an Associate Research Fellow to support the work of Professor Steve Hinchliffe. This ESRC-funded post is available immediately. The successful applicant will in the first instance: assist in the completion of fieldwork, data analysis and dissemination activities associated with the ESRC-funded Biosecurity Borderlands Project based in Geography at Exeter. The researcher will be responsible for co-designing and co-analysing research into contagious processes, involving working with the project team (Dr Clive Sabel and Dr Sam Kinsley) on large data sets, devising critical mapping techniques and working with critical social theory.

The post will include working with partners in the US and London on large data sets as a means to develop an understanding of contemporary contagions in social media, infectious disease and financial domains. Work will involve quantitative and spatial analysis as well as theoretical development and applicants keen to explore new methods and critical theory are welcome to apply. The successful applicant will be able to present information on research progress and outcomes, communicate complex information, orally, in writing and electronically.

Applicants will possess a relevant PhD and be able to demonstrate sufficient knowledge in the discipline and of research methods and techniques to work within established research programmes. Applicants will be able to work in teams, have an aptitude for spatial analysis and for social theory.

The starting salary will be from £24,766 on Grade E, depending on qualifications and experience.

We are seeking to appoint an Experimental Officer/Senior Experimental Officer to provide computer system administration and support to staff and post-graduate students in the Astrophysics group in the College of Engineering, Mathematics and Physical Sciences at the University of Exeter.

The successful candidate will possess an up to date knowledge of relevant technologies, coupled with a strong focus on user requirements and strategic planning, which will deliver a computing infrastructure capable of facilitating world-class research. Good communication skills will play a vital role in liaising effectively with colleagues elsewhere in the University to ensure the delivery of a high quality service to end-users.

Applicants will have a degree in relevant academic area or equivalent. Applicants will have experience of Mac OS X and Linux administration, and experience of supporting a range of hardware from laptops through to rack mounted servers and storage. Associate Research Fellow / Research Fellow in Epigenetics of Schizophrenia

This full time post is available from June 2013 on a fixed term basis for three years.

The College wishes to recruit a Research Fellow / Associate Research Fellow to join the Complex Disease Epigenetics Group (see www.epigenomicslab.com for more information). We are a dynamic research team within UEMS researching the role of epigenetic processes in common disease. We have been recently funded by the Medical Research Council (MRC) to examine genome-wide patterns of DNA methylation in an extensive collection of several thousand clinical samples, post-mortem brain tissue, and discordant monozygotic twins. The project will use cutting-edge molecular and bioinformatic approaches to integrate methylomic data with existing genome-wide SNP data to identify novel pathways to disease.

The successful applicant, who will be involved in overseeing the day-to-day running of the project, coordinating data collection and analysis will have a broad knowledge in genomics (especially epigenetics), with previous experience of laboratory approaches and/or bioinformatics. Previous experience of high throughput DNA methylation profiling and working with large data-sets would be an advantage. We are interested in applications from either lab-based molecular biologists or bioinformaticians/computer scientists.

Applicants will possess a relevant PhD and a publication record in genomics, bioinformatics, and/or epigenetic epidemiology.

The College wishes to recruit an Associate Research Fellow to support the work of Professor Peter Krustrup in Sport and Health Sciences. This post is available from May or June 1, 2013, for a fixed-term of 18 months. The successful applicant will conduct research into the muscular adaptation to training and the physiological response to various types of physical activity using e.g. muscle homogenate and single fibre biochemical analyses and histochemical analyses.

The post will include collaborative research work in relation to acute exercise and training interventions, data collection and laboratory analyses using established muscle and blood analyses as well as development of new research techniques and methods. Economics is a part of the Business School and is expected to undergo significant expansion over the next few years as part of the overall expansion of the Business School itself. The expansion of the discipline is intended to consolidate and enhance its research standing both nationally and internationally. Members of the discipline enjoy a high degree of collaboration, often going beyond existing specialisms. This high level of integration facilitates the introduction of new members of staff into a strong research culture, as well as allowing the pooling of expertise.
