•  Design programmes to develop early literacy in English for nursery, kindergarten & lower primary levels;
• Develop tools that will help teachers to track their students’ development;
• Devise learner support materials that integrate early childhood needs (e.g. eye-and coordination, fine motor skills, etc) so as to make the transition into graphophonemic awareness.
• Must be keenly aware of the strengths of phonics and whole language approaches to developing early literacy, as well as their limitations;
• Should have a working knowledge of available reading schemes for early literacy; and
• Should have an appreciation of practical strategies that can complement a teacher’s work where phonics and whole language may fail.
