Te Whanau Tupu Ngatahi o Aotearoa – Playcentre Aotearoa formed in 1941 it is a licensed early childhood education provider and charitable trust, with a philosophy of ‘parents as first educators’. Playcentre seeks to empower whanau and tamariki to work, play, learn and grow together, and today has over 400 centres nationwide.

The Chief Executive will lead Playcentre by implementing the new organizational structure as a result of the 2019 merger of the New Zealand Playcentre Federation – 31 Associations and all Playcentres into one organization. The Chief Executive will also be responsible for leading the strategic operations to ensure centres are supported at a local level, and for building capability to fulfill longer term strategic goals.

Key priorities of the Chief Executive are to create a strong “one organization” culture; grow the organization and increase and diversify funding; and act as a key representative of the organization to lift engagement nationally to advance the interests of Playcentre.

Playcentre has a strong bi cultural commitment to its work and kaupapa that values diversity and inclusion. As such, a strong cultural awareness will be valued and an understanding of tikanga and Te Reo Maori would be advantageous.

Person Profile:

  • Proven ability of achieving organizational goals at an executive level, with experience in supporting a Board
  • Experience in leading a geographically dispersed organization
  • Knowledge of the Early Childhood Education sector (including adult and community education) in New Zealand and an understanding of how it works; knowledge and experience in Playcentre is highly desirable
  • Commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi
  • Ability to think strategically, articulate and implement Play centre’s vision
  • A connector and collaborator with a track record of success in building and maintaining exceptional stakeholder relationships
  • Demonstrated financial and people management expertise
  • Commercial acumen and well developed negotiation skills
  • Forward thinking, with the ability to identify and capitalize upon opportunities
  • A consultative and open style with a ‘no surprises’ approach
  • Very highly developed written and oral communication skill
